Why I Chose the Name Captain Alaîn: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Dual Heritage

The title of “Captain” is often given to those who lead, guide, and take responsibility for navigating through uncharted waters. It signifies someone who has the courage to steer the course, to make difficult decisions, and to inspire others to follow. The name Captain Alaîn is much more than just a title—it’s a symbol of my personal journey of growth, transformation, and self-discovery.

The Path to Becoming Captain Alaîn

My journey to becoming Captain Alaîn officially began in 2018 when I earned my pilot’s licence. The experience of flying a plane was a powerful moment for me, symbolising my control and direction over my own life. However, this journey started long before I took to the skies. It began a few years earlier when I made a personal commitment to embark on a deep self-exploration—a renaissance of sorts.

This self-reflective journey was a quest to understand who I truly was and to make sense of the dissonance I had been feeling in my life. As a symbolic gesture, I adopted a private vehicle number plate to mark the beginning of this new chapter. It represented my commitment to myself—to be the captain of my own destiny and navigate through life with purpose and intention.

Discovering My Dual Heritage

My story is also deeply intertwined with my origins. Born in Cameroon, I moved to Great Britain and have lived here for many years. This dual heritage has become a significant part of my identity, enriching my perspective and grounding my journey of self-discovery. The blend of my Cameroonian roots and my life in Great Britain forms a unique narrative that I carry with me—a fusion of cultures, traditions, and experiences that have shaped who I am today.

Yet, despite my pride in my dual heritage, I see myself as a citizen of the world. I believe that we are all part of a global community, and I long for a world free from barriers like visas and border controls—where people can roam freely, experience diverse cultures, and explore as much of this beautiful planet as possible during our lifetimes. I dream of a world where we can live without artificial divisions, and where our shared humanity connects us beyond borders.

A Journey of Epistemic Insight

My renaissance was more than just a personal transformation—it was an epistemic insight journey. I explored different aspects of my personality, beliefs, and values through a variety of lenses: psychological, emotional, and philosophical. I sought to understand myself on a deeper level, questioning my motivations and the patterns that influenced my behaviour.

This exploration led me to a profound realisation that could be summarised in an acronym: CARE—Consciousness, Awareness, Responsibility, and Entitlement. To me, CARE is synonymous with love—both for myself and for the world around me. This journey into self-love was the cornerstone that empowered me to truly become the captain of my own life.

Becoming the Captain of Your Own Destiny

The name Captain Alaîn serves as a reminder to everyone that we all have the power to take control of our lives. My hope is that my story inspires others to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery, to understand who they truly are, and to embrace their unique paths. When we know ourselves deeply, we can seek out the experiences, people, and opportunities that help us grow and steer clear of those that hold us back.

Life is a journey filled with experiences, and the quality of that journey is largely determined by how well we know ourselves. As Socrates wisely said, “Know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.” When we understand who we are, we gain clarity about our values, our boundaries, and our true purpose, leading us to live a life that is rich, authentic, and fulfilling.

The Importance of Self-Love and Awareness

Through my journey, I discovered that self-love is not just a motivational buzzword but the foundation upon which all meaningful relationships and endeavours are built. It is the love for oneself that enables us to live genuinely and courageously, without being swayed by external judgements or expectations. As the author Bell Hooks eloquently put it, “The moment we choose to love, we begin to move toward freedom, to act in ways that liberate ourselves and others.”

This self-awareness and love allowed me to break free from limiting beliefs and societal expectations, embracing the role of Captain Alaîn—a leader not only of my own destiny but also a guide for others on their path of self-discovery.

Embracing a Global Mindset

While my dual heritage is a significant part of who I am, my ultimate vision extends beyond borders. I believe in a world where all people are free to explore, connect, and experience the diversity of cultures that our planet offers. My Cameroonian origin and my life in Great Britain are just chapters in a larger story—one that belongs to a global citizen. I advocate for a future without barriers, where travel, connection, and understanding are not restricted by borders or visas, allowing us all to become true citizens of the world.

Taking Control of Your Life

Becoming Captain Alaîn was about more than earning a pilot’s licence—it was about taking command of my life, my choices, and my destiny. It’s a call to everyone to recognise their own power to steer their life in the direction that resonates with their true self. As Viktor Frankl, a survivor of unimaginable hardships, once said, “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

This quote resonates deeply with my philosophy: we may not always have control over our circumstances, but we always have the power to change how we respond to them. By becoming the captain of your own life, you unlock the potential to create a future that is aligned with your deepest values and aspirations.

The Epistemic Insight Approach

Through my epistemic insight journey, I learned that the key to a fulfilling life lies in understanding ourselves not just from one perspective but from multiple angles. This holistic approach allows us to see the bigger picture of who we are, why we think the way we do, and how we can live in harmony with our true nature. When we reach this level of self-awareness, we are not only empowered to shape our own lives but also to engage with others in a more compassionate and meaningful way.

A Call to Embrace Your Inner Captain

I chose the name Captain Alaîn not just because I earned the title in the skies, but because I became the captain of my own destiny here on Earth. My hope is that you, too, will embark on a journey to discover your true self, to understand what drives you, and to take command of your life’s course. We are all on this journey of experiences called life, and the better we know ourselves, the more effectively we can navigate its twists and turns.

As Rumi once said, “Do not be satisfied with the stories that come before you. Unfold your own myth.” Becoming the captain of your life is about unfolding your own myth, creating your own narrative, and living a life true to your essence.

Conclusion: The Captain’s Creed

The journey of self-discovery and self-love is not a destination; it is an ongoing process of learning, evolving, and transforming. By becoming the captain of your own life, you take control of your story, your decisions, and your destiny. You learn to navigate through life’s challenges with confidence, creating a future that aligns with your deepest values.

I encourage you to chart your course, explore your depths, and become the captain of your destiny. The world is waiting for you to step into your power, to live freely, and to embrace your journey with open arms. After all, we are all citizens of this world, navigating through life’s experiences, and the more we understand ourselves, the more we can connect, love, and live with purpose.
